In the far west of Slovenia, stretching for 72 km2, there is a charming and interesting area called Brda in italian Collio; the word in Slovene denotes small rolling hills frequently criss-crossed by valley streams, this is the exact description of this land. On its southeast side we can find the emerald-green Soča River, the Idrija River in the northwest (beyond which it extends partly over the italian territory), the Sabotin Mountain in the east and the Korada Mountain on the northern side.
This place, of about six thousands inhabitants (Brici in italian) and composed of villages closely grouped that surround a little church, sweeps down to the Friulian Plain. Under favourable weather conditions it is possible to admire the Adriatic Sea; the influence of the sea combined with the beneficial Mediterranean climate helps in increasing soil fertility. The good natural conditions and the hard work of local people allow a rich production of tempting fruits such as cherries, peaches, apricots, olives, figs, chestnuts and the grapes of course, then turned into an excellent wine, generously served at St. Martin´s Day.
Very turbolent is its history and very interesting the recent events. On your way from village to village you could be easily fascinated by the historical heritage and rich cultural variety. Brda is also the land of castles and white churches (about 30 still well-preserved) usually situated on the top of hills. Nature plays here an interesting role: the sweetest smelling flowers in spring and juicy fruits in summer; the autumn offers magnificient games of colour combined with the most important local activity: the grape harvest. During the late autumn and winter the nature seems to calm down, sometimes it snows, wine growers stay in their cellars and thanks to their hard work a good wine flows from the barrels. They will be honoured to serve it to everyone.
